Vandalism at CW Henry School
www.philadelphiaspeaks.com/forum/mt-airy-chestnut-hill-germantown/14489-vandalism-cw-henry-school.html
On Sunday evening, July 4th, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Philadelphia Fire Department was called to a fire on the C.W. Henry kindergarten playground. The fire completely destroyed the train play structure and damaged both the rubber playground surface and several nearby trees. Designed for younger children, the playground is dedicated for use by the kindergarten classes during the school day and is used by many neighborhood families during the non-school hours. In response to the fire, C.W. Henry Principal, Caren Trantas expressed

Very little busing for desegregation left in Philly
www.thenotebook.org/blog/091536/very-littl-busing-desegregation-left-philadelphia
As the School District and the courts prepare to put to rest the long-running legal battle over racial equity in schools, some statistics about school busing came to light that deserve a little more attention. Busing students for desegregation, which in the 1980s and 90s was the District's main avenue for parents to exercise school choice, has declined by almost 90 percent since then.

Ronnie Polaneczky: Why not a public-school parent for SRC slot?
www.philly.com/dailynews/local/20090312_Ronnie_Polaneczky__Why_not_a_public-school_parent_for_SRC_slot_.html
WHILE WE'VE been distracted by talk of a trash tax, swimming-pool closures and library shutdowns, four of the School Reform Commission's seats have quietly gone up for grabs. The terms of Heidi Ramirez, Martin Bednarek and SRC chairwoman Sandra Dungee Glenn have expired. All have agreed to stay put for now, and have said that they'd like to be re-appointed. The fourth commissioner, Jim Gallagher, has already left. Kevin Peter is hoping one of those seats will be his, if he can convince the mayor or governor to appoint him.

Philadelphia school funding worries parents
findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_kmtpi/is_200802/ai_n24366130
A Philadelphia School District plan to send more money to schools with the neediest students has some parents worried even though the change is at least a year away. Each school in the district receives a budget to pay for teachers, programs and other resources. There are long-standing inequities among schools in part because inexperienced teachers, who earn less, tend to work at the most troubled schools.

Foundation backs Philadelphia schools publication
www.philly.com/inquirer/breaking/business_breaking/38021099.html
For a cutting-edge news operation, the Philadelphia Public School Notebook looks decidedly, well, old school. Its newsroom is the typical warren of cluttered desks, stacked files, and the day-to-day detritus of reporting. The Notebook itself is a standard-looking tabloid-size print publication, about 45 percent ads, 55 percent stories and photographs.

Our Mount Airy - Neighborhood History

Public schools in the neighborhood include C. W. Henry, Henry H. Houston Elementary School, Eleanor Cope Emlen, J. E. Hill, Leeds Middle School, and the Academy of the Middle Years (AMY) Northwest. Most of these schools are much less ethnically diverse than the neighborhood as a whole, Henry being a notable exception. [citations needed] Mount Airy's neighborhood public high school is Martin Luther King High which is located in East Germantown. Private schools include the Waldorf School of Philadelphia, Project Learn, and Holy Cross Catholic School.

In fact, she loves it so much that when NBC Philadelphia offered $5,000 for a classroom makeover earlier this year, she wrote an essay on why she thought the music classroom at C.W. Henry deserved that makeover. Sabrinaâ??s submission about her school's creative use of music in math test preparation won.
